The purpose of this book is to show how the idyllic life we
had when we were children was destroyed overnight by the Nazi Movement and how all of us,
who had such strong roots in our hometowns, were suddenly cast out. Yet, we were the lucky
ones since we were able to escape with our lives and had the chance to build up a new
future. Even my younger brother, Bernard, who suffered more than all the others, by now
has become highly successful, with a wonderful family.
But not a single day goes by when we, of our generation and background, dont look
back and think of those unfortunate enough not to have been able to escape. This is the
reason that about one third of this book is devoted to eyewitness accounts of these
dreadful years.
We, as well as future generations, must never forget to be grateful for the blessing of
our survival.
I also wish to thank all those who contributed their reports.
Last, not least, my thanks to Relly for her patience with me while I did this work.
